Topsy Turvey Quite often after Mass people look blankly at me when I tell them that my telephone number is on the newsletter and I often have to go and get one for them from the table in the porch. Conversely, the guides to the Order of Mass are not meant to be taken home but every week I have to photocopy more. So, please take home the former and leave the latter. Many thanks.

Catholic teaching on marriage. At Masses this weekend, we receive a letter from Archbishops Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. It is a statement of our Catholic faith about marriage and issued in the light of the forthcoming consultation by the Government on changing the legal definition of marriage. In the light of this letter, you are asked to consider signing the Coalition for Marriage’s online petition which can be found at www.C4M.org.uk. It reads: “I support the legal definition of marriage which is the voluntary union for life of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. I oppose any attempt to redefine it.”

Children and Lent. If you wish to help your children understand the meaning of Lent more fully there is excellent material available at www.missiontogether.org.uk.

Altar Rails As you will know, the original altar rails and sanctuary gates given in memory of Michael and Caroline Fitzgerald were truncated and removed respectively when the sanctuary was reordered. In the past few weeks our pastoral centre at London Colney has closed and all the furniture and church fittings were offered to parishes around the diocese. I asked for some altar rails and was successful in my application. As you can see they are almost the precise height, width and length that we need and fit in well with the existing structures. Now that they run full length of the sanctuary step I hope those of you who kneel for Holy Communion will find it easier to do so and I remind everyone that you may receive either kneeling or standing, on the tongue or in the hand. But be careful, they are not fixed to the floor yet!
