Some words of Pope Benedict spoken during the Hyde Park vigil to 80,000 people. The bulk of our parish group of 200 had, on the way there, run the gauntlet of the 5,000 “Protest the Pope” coalition march.

Speaking of the nearby Tyburn site of execution of numerous reformation martyrs he noted that "In our own time the price to be paid for fidelity … often involves being dismissed out of hand, ridiculed or parodied. And yet, the Church cannot withdraw from the task of proclaiming Christ and his Gospel as saving truth, the source of our ultimate happiness as individuals and as the foundation of a just and humane society.”

The demonstrators were made up of “Gay Rights” groups, The Humanist Association, the National Secular Society, pro-abortion groups, groups pro-formally distributing condoms in Africa groups (which public enabling of promiscuity has been shown to make things worse), as well as some representatives of some of the children inexcusably abused by a small minority of clergy. 200,000 later lined the same streets to greet the Pope on his way to Hyde Park

PAPAL VISIT: The Pope’s full programme is on white A4 sheets in the porch. These sheets also have information about viewing all of the events LIVE on EWTN. They can also be viewed LIVE online thorough “The Visit” website. ALSO the beatification Mass can be viewed live on a large screen in the Junior School, Linacre Rd, next Sunday 9:30 am. This will not fulfil our “Sunday obligation”! The 9:00 am Mass here will be short.

GETTING INTO PAPAL EVENTS – Pilgrim packs for those whose names went in before the main deadline are NOW available for collection from the flower sacristy. Other packs should be available on the day itself!.

HYDE PARK: We have 150 booked. We are still getting requests and there seems to be a small chance of getting some extra tickets.
We are planning to meet here at Church at 1:15 pm or, if you prefer at 2:30 pm at the Green Park entrance on Piccadilly, to the left of the Green Park tube station as you come out. The Jubilee line will be operating from West Hampstead, not from Willesden Gn – so take a bus to there, or the 52 to Hyde Park corner and walk along Piccadilly to the park entrance on your right. At Green Park we will give out tickets etc.

The doors to the Hyde Park event area are expected to open around midday. The Pope is expected to arrive at 6 pm, with the event finishing at 8pm. If you wish to get into Hyde Park at an earlier time please pick up your ticket etc from Clergy House during the morning. Remember to consider bringing a portable seat as there are none available there – and see below.

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the security at the various papal events and have informed us that:

1. Every pilgrim attending one of the papal visit events (Beatification in Birmingham or Hyde Park) MUST have a photo ID (Passport, Bus pass etc.

2. Every Pilgrim MUST know the name of their pilgrim leader. For the beatification in Birmingham this will be Deacon Michael Jarmulowicz; for the Hyde Park event it is Fr Hugh MacKenzie.

3. Every pilgrim will be issued with a Pilgrim Pack, a Pilgrim Pass (Paper ticket) and Pilgrim band (Rubber wristband). The passes and wristbands will be colour coded and numbered.

4. The wristbands and tickets WILL BE ISSUED ON THE DAY; this will be on the coach to Birmingham or at the agreed meeting point for Hyde Park. We have been told that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES can the passes and wristbands be given out before the day

Bible Study at St Mary Magdalen’s Church -
How is your prayer life? Do you find it a one-sided conversation and never seem to hear God speaking? Well many great saints have said that the Bible is ‘a love letter from God’. God can speak to us in many ways, but one very important way is through sacred scripture. St Jerome in the 5th Century said “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”. The Second Vatican Council in 1965 wrote ‘we speak to Him when we pray; we hear Him when we read the Scriptures’
In December we will start a new liturgical year (Year A of the three yearly cycle), and on most Sundays the Gospel readings will be taken from the Gospel of St Matthew. By studying the Gospel in detail, you can be sure that when you hear the text being proclaimed at Mass it will come alive and you will be much better able to hear what God is trying to say to you that day.

Last year a small group went through the 14 historical books of the Bible, from Genesis through to Acts, with rave reviews being received. In this study you will be guaranteed to have many ‘wow’ moments when things Jesus said and did suddenly become clear and fit together, but more importantly they will also change you and your life!
This in-depth study of the Gospel of St Matthew will be held on Tuesday evenings 7.30pm -8.30ish. Starting on 21st September for 24 weeks to 12th April. The group will be led by Deacon Michael Jarmulowicz using the “ Matthew: The King and His Kingdom” study guide published by Ascension Press. All are welcome.
